So you want to get promoted? Get a pay raise? Or maybe have an assistant? I’d say those are all great ideas, and that you should go for it. But before you go knocking on your boss’s door I have a few things you need to know. You can 100% work your way up the career ladder, try these tips!

1. Be good at your job

I don’t mean to state the obvious, but if you’re going to get promoted or climb your way up any company ladder, you need to have a solid foundation. You need to be good at your job. You know that saying.. “Be so good they can’t ignore you’. Well, I want you to be so amazing in your field that your boss comes to you! Find confidence in your work, be original and unforgettable. Be a leader, be fearless, be innovative. Without excelling at your current position, it will be hard to grow and expand your horizons.

2. Support your colleagues

If you want to move ahead in your career, leadership is a necessary quality to have. You can practice your leadership abilities by providing support to your co-workers. If they need help, offer your expertise. If you have a staff function coming up; you could offer to organize part of the event. Be creative but try and put yourself in more leader-like roles. At the top of any company is a strong, confident leader. That could be you!

3. Impress your boss

This tip is key! If you are trying to work your way up the career ladder, you need to impress one particular person, your boss. Your boss is the one that is capable of offering you that promotion you’ve been working towards. They are also your best connection and have the ability to introduce you to significant people. Try and do something to impress your boss, whether it’s remembering their birthday or presenting a new and innovative idea at your next meeting. You want to show your attention to detail and ability to go above and beyond. Qualities like these will stick with your boss and be the first thing they remember when they think of you.

Your boss will likely be your opportunity to move up!

4. Stay motivated

We cannot forget that our dream career isn’t always an overnight success. Our ideal job will be the result of hard work, knowledge, and experience. Don’t get discouraged if you aren’t getting noticed in the way that you hoped. If you get turned down once (or twice), that is okay! The grind will only make you more resilient.

5. Set goals and check in on your expectations

Stay focused, and keep your goals distinct. Take some time to write out what you want in a journal and make it very clear what you are striving towards. Put together a simple vision board with your ideal salary or famous women that inspire you. This visual will keep your specific goal at the forefront of your mind.

Also, make sure that you are checking in on what you aim to accomplish in your career. Take time each month reevaluate your progress and hold yourself accountable.
