Knowing you’ve got a colleague you can rely on at work is proven to make us happier and more productive. Courtney Gerring explains why finding yourself a work wife can go a long way to boosting your career.

Though you may have dismissed the idea of a work wife as little more than an instagram hashtag, it might be time to start thinking about finding one. ? A work wife is that person who provides companionship and support at the office or whilst you’re building a business and need someone to share the ups and downs with. She’s that person who will give you all the honest  answers, whether you want to hear them or not.

Put simply, a work wife is someone  who’ll always have your back when it comes to your professional life, safe in the knowledge that you’ll do the same for her. She’s the professional version of a romantic partner, helping you become the best version of your professional self whilst supporting you along the way.

Research has proved that having a work wife and or a female squad of supporters can go a long way to making us more successful because, as we know, making your way through work or business as a woman  can be really tough. As a female, we all need a strong and diverse network, in which we are active and engaged. A squad of professional women with whom you can discuss business opportunities, the ups and downs of your career, the economy and those career goals that we all have our eyes set on. It’s imperative to our well-being and the success of our careers to have a close group of women who have your back.

Need more convincing? Take a look at our top for reasons for tying down a work wife as soon as possible:

Your Mascot

Running late to the office? Or in need of a strong recommendation?  This is where your work wife comes in really handy. Whether the school drop off wasn’t as smooth as planned or public transport has pretty much decided to take the day off, it’s comforting to know you’ve got a well-respected peer at the office vouching for you, You know this woman will always have your back and be in your corner.

Equally if you’re in need of a reference or recommendation to boost your CV or in securing a new client, she’ll always be on hand to provide one. Though some might see this as biased, it’s actually much better to have someone who understands how you work and knows your professional background speak about you, rather than relying on the insights of a far-off boss who doesn’t really know much about your working style beyond your figures.

Let’s Get Real

Everyone needs someone they can rely on to provide candid but kind feedback – the kind that actually motivates you to better yourself rather  than makes you feel like you’re a failure. . It’s hard to find that key person who is willing to openly give feedback, – whether it’s a well-placed compliment or constructive criticism – but it will only inspire you to be the best version of yourself. Your work wife will understand the office dynamics or the business you are trying to grow better than anyone else in your circle. She’ll be the one with the most insider perspective and can definitely be a sounding board for advice, whether it’s what we want to hear or not. Achieving your goals gets easier if you have a confidante you can trust with your fragile dreams but you can also rely on to provide the objective perspective your plans need to advance.

Motivation

It’s important to set realistic goals and expectations in life and in your career and most of the time we can rely on our own motivation to get us through the tough moments. Every now and again, though, we need a fan base and a cheerleading squad –  a woman or group we can turn to when the going gets touch and we’re in need of a serious pick-me-up. A work wife sees you when you’re in the trenches or after you’ve secured that mega contract. She’ll challenge you to take it a step further and she’ll celebrate with you when you achieve your victories.

Good for your Health

It’s proven that one of the best things a woman can do for her health is to nurture her relationships with the women in her life. Knowing you have that work partner to rely on can go a long way to helping you feel supported, understood and appreciated at work or in business. Don’t underestimate the power of knowing there’s a person at work who’ll lift you up when you need it and help you become a better person and professional as well.

Whether you’re a solopreneur or work at a large office,  a work wife can provide huge benefits to your career. Female empowerment and friendship are proven as a powerful force to drive business and finding a peer you can rely on to provide that (whilst providing the same in return) is something that every woman deserves, regardless of where she’s at in her career.
