Love it or hate it, social media is here to stay and you need to create a killer impression online to survive it. For those of you looking to build your personal brand, social media is the fastest way to do that. But before you go all out, take a second to consider the following 6 ideas to help you create a killer impression online. The message you send on social media will help attract like-minded individuals and establish your authority in your area so it’s worth the extra effort.

Pictures are the darlings of social media. They’re fast, fun and easily shared. Make sure the pictures you share online are high quality with an interesting subject, angle or perspective; no one wants to see another stock photo of two people shaking hands.

Don’t just post for the sake of posting. Make sure you’re sharing valuable, interesting content that your audience will actually appreciate. With so much mediocre stuff out there on the internet, you don’t need to add to it. Instead, choose to share something unique and useful that will make them smile, think and thank you.

Stay away from words like ‘free’, ‘rich’ or ‘easy’ that makes it sound like you’re peddling some shady deal to make others insta-rich on the internet. You need to build your trust and credibility so stay away from anything that sounds like you’re a con artist (unless, of course, you actually are).

It’s hard to know, like and trust someone who hides behind a superficial, glossy persona. It’s okay to be you online (the internet loves weirdness). Tell the world about your quirks, aspirations and obsessions to give people a peek into who you are. It will help them feel like they know you better, because they will.

No one’s life is as glamorous as they pretend it is online and it’s okay to admit that. Actually, it’s more than okay. It will endear you to your audience who will feel they can relate to your not-so-perfect life. So go admit you’re not ‘crushing it’ every day or having the time of your life every second. Real emotions are cool too.

Pick a niche to post about and attract people who are likeminded. The Internet is full of obsessive communities who love to follow social media accounts that feed their obsession. Find your tribe of people who live for the same things you do and give them what they want.
