Whether you need a kick up the rear just to get out of bed or just a little motivation to better yourself, give these motivational songs a whirl.

1. One Way Ticket – LeAnn Rimes

‘Standing on the border, looking out into the great unknown’

‘I won’t let fear clip my wings and tell me how high I can fly’

This song is essentially about letting go of the past and regaining your independence to move forward. I love singing these lyrics at full pelt while driving my VW Polo on a blue sky day along whichever motorway I’m on. My car is my ‘time out’ sanctuary to refuel, where I can sit back, remind myself of how far I’ve come and where I could head if I just enjoy the ride and embrace opportunity. Give it a go!

2. Eye of the Tiger – Survivor

‘So many times it happens too fast, you trade your passion for glory’

‘Rising up to the challenge of our rival’

Possibly no real surprise this features in my top five and it may seem a little cliché but this really is a great song to start your day and be left feeling empowered. What are you passionate about? Do you always stay true to yourself? Most of us will come up against people in life who perhaps want to knock you down or trample over you to get where they want to. That’s life. But remember who you are, what you’re worth and what you’re capable of. And that my friend can pack a punch!

3. Imagine – John Lennon

‘You may say I’m a dreamer’

‘Imagine all the people, sharing all the world’

Our dreams and aspirations may vary, but for most it’s about finding ourselves in a place of happiness and safety. We want that for ourselves, for loved ones and for those who deserve a break in life. You’d have to be living on Mars not to have seen the months of hardship and fear endured by those fleeing conflict – also known as the Migration Crisis. While our individual resources to help are limited, we put our trust in those in power to help reduce the suffering. However, if we could all do something to at least help another person closer to home, then perhaps we can start to make this a better world?

4. Stronger – Kelly Clarkson

‘What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’

‘Stand a little taller’

You’ve heard the phrase; sticks and stones bla bla bla…well it’s true to some extent. Words can hurt like hell, but let them travel through one ear and straight out of the other, don’t let them touch the sides and the bully misses the shot. You win! It doesn’t matter if it’s a partner, colleague or so-called friend; you just need to believe in yourself. Now stand up straight and put on some killer heels if necessary (I’m only 5ft2, so it helps among the big people!)

5. It’s My Life – Bon Jovi

‘It’s my life, it’s now or never’

‘Got to make your own breaks’

This song kinda speaks for itself. It’s YOUR life. You can’t have change without making a change. I’m not saying drop everything in a reckless fashion. But invest in yourself. Take some calculated risks. Do something you’ve always wanted to do – however big or small. So what if you fail? Do you think the Einsteins of the past got it all right first time? Exactly. So go make some waves in the ocean – or even just a puddle if it’s raining outside (wellies optional).
